Domaine des Sanzay has an amazing range of wines from the town of Saumur using primarily Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. The clay on limestone soil provides wines that are light on their feet with good intensity and acidity. Louis and Julienne founded the estate in 1880 and it is now run by the fifth generation. Didier, who took over in 1993, works in the vineyards and winery while his wife Celine manages the office and sales. Their son Ludovic helps his father more each year. This 28 hectare domaine produces around 1400 hectoliters annually and is maintained with minimal plowing and grass between the vines. Indigenous yeasts used are during fermentation with estate bottling began in 1986. Officially organic starting with the 2019 vintage, but in reality, their farming practices changed little to meet the certification as their house is in the vineyards they always farmed as gently as possible.

A single vineyard Chenin Blanc of 40 year old vines planted on limestone on a hill overlooking the Loire River in Montsoreau, done in stainless steel. Orchard fruit and wet stone aromas, medium bodied and dry with an almost waxy texture and zingy acidity.

Saumur-Champigny Domaine

Naturally all Cabernet Franc that is a blend of parcels totally 3.5 hectares planted on clay limestone with a southeast exposure and an altitude of 50 meters above sea level. The typical vintage yields 50 hectoliters per hectare for around 160 hectoliters total. Tuffeau, the local name for the soil maintains moisture well and stores heat from the day to give back to the vines at night. The vines average around 40 years with density around 4500 vines per hectare. Picking is done by machine and sorted on rotary table. The juice is fermented with natural yeasts and vinified in thermoregulated stainless steel with a gentle maceration lasting ten days and further maturation of six months before bottling with renewable Nomacorc corks made from vegetable matter.
Garnet color with a pretty violety nose; small red berrries damsel plums on the round and smooth palate; a quintessential bistro or brassiere wine that is friendly to a variety of foods and tastes.

A famous single parcel of chalky limestone with sandy topsoil in Saumur-Champigny with lower yields and longer maceration, aged in concrete vats to allow this delicately intense terroir to shine through. More serious with darker fruit, lovely length and very fine but present tannins.
