Varietal : 100% native Gaglioppo
Appellation: Cirò DOC
Vineyard: Piciara and Plane of Franze (2 hectares )
Vineyard Work: Organic
Soil: Clay Limestone and red sand
Exposure: SouthWest
Altitude: 105 meters above sea level
Training system: Alberello ( Bushtrained)
This training system demands extra work in the vineyard during all phases of vine development and grape cultivation but the growing season is prolonged a precious couple of weeks allowing the grapes to gain concentration and complexity
Age of Vines: 66 and 34 years
Yield: 1.5 KG per plant; 60 quintals pre hectare
Harvest: Manual, beginning of October and in small crates
Winemaking: The wine is destemmed
and crushed immediately. Maceration
and fermentation in cement tanks without temperature control.
Maturation: On lees for 6 months in concrete tank followed by a further 12
month in concrete and then the wine is bottle aged at least 6 months.
Yeast: Natural
Alcohol: 14%
Ageability: Depending on the vintage the wine can mature and can in
complexity for 10 years or more.
Color: Ruby red with streaks of orange (typical color of gaglioppo)
Tasting Notes: Aromas of Licorice/Anise and prune first come out of the
glass, after a couple vigorous swirls fruit is coaxed out predominately
red
fruit especially raspberry. The wine is mediumbodied,
balanced structure,
and even elegant. Notes of cherry and red currants with a hint of earth mix
nicely on the wines velvety texture. A touch of acidity gives the wine a nice
refreshing, crisp finish.
